Full color LED projection lighting illuminates Mikazuki Falls!
Mikazuki Falls in Kusu Town, Oita Prefecture
(Lighting supervision, La Porta Co., Ltd.)
Introduction
Arashiyama Taki Shrine and Mikazuki Falls held an illumination event in the fall of 2024 as part of Kusu Towns revitalization efforts.
Here we introduce our LEDSFOCUS PRO full color LED projection lighting that was used for the event.
Before visiting the falls, we paid a visit to the Kusu Tourism Association, the organizer of the event, to have a talk with them.
It is located next to Bungo-Mori Station, a limited express stop on the Kyudai Main Line located in the center of Kusu Town.

(Interview from October 2024)
Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to speak with us today.
Thank you also for using our LEDSFOCUS PRO full color LEDprojection lighting.
Ms. Takeishi
Thank you for coming all this way to visit us in Kusu today.
It’s very nice to meet you.
We would like to hear from you about your town.
We have visited Hita, just to the west, and Yufu, to the east, several times, and have passed through Kusu, but this is our first time to actually visit.
Plans for illumination of Kusu Town’s famous “Mikazuki Falls”
Ms. Takeishi
Well, we’re not as well known as the neighboring city, so we’ve been carrying out various activities to lure visitors.
What kind of place is Kusu?
Ms. Takeishi
The center of the town is located around Bungo-Mori Station here,
and not far from the station you can find Bungo-Mori Roundhouse,
the former engine shed, which was completed in 1934, and was the largest such facility in Kyushu.
The Bungo-Mori Station building was designed by Mr. Eiji Mitooka, who is famous for train design.
The station is also a sacred place for anime such as "Suzume", and a home for fairy tales.
We also have Mount Kirikabu, a symbol of the town, where you canparaglide. We still haven’t fully conveyed the appeal of our town.
Thank you. Actually, it’s clear to see that the town has many attractions. Could you tell us about Mikazuki Falls?
Ms. Takeishi
In line with the efforts of the Japan Tourism Agency, the decision was made to light up Mikazuki Falls in an effort to draw inbound tourists.
The main waterfall is lit up in full color that changes freely, and the
beautifully lit up neighboring Arashiyama Taki Shrine, which takes its name from the falls, is also unmissable.
Can you tell us a little about why you decided to use Stanley’s LEDSFOCUS PRO?
Ms. Takeishi
We had previously used mercury lamps to light up the falls, but we stopped this after the flooding. It was only recently that we decided once again to use illumination.
We used Stanley's full color LED projection lighting, with its proven track record at Niagara Falls, because we are able to change the color, and white light is an absolute must.
Thank you. So, it was the waterfall connection that drew yourattention.
The lighting used at Niagara involves reproducing full color light by modulating white, red, blue, and green projection lighting, but with the cutting-edge LEDSFOCUS PRO full color LED projection lighting you’ve selected for Mikazuki Falls, the color can be changed with a single projection light, making it possible to produce color changes even with very few lights. It also has a built-in power supply.
Ms. Takeishi
After this, please visit the falls and see the changing colors for yourself.
We’re very much looking forward to that.We heard that the falls will only be lit up this fall (2024). It seems a bit of a waste.
Ms. Takeishi
It would indeed be a waste of this wonderful full color LED projection lighting, and I sincerely hope we can use it again from next year.
You can also find Jion Falls downstream of the Kusugawa River a little further to the west, and we would like to light up those falls as we have done with Mikazuki Falls.
Thank you for taking the time to talk with us. We wish you continued good luck with your efforts to attract tourists.
We found it very impressive when Ms. Takeishi said, 'We welcome visitors to Kusu Town, which is located in the countryside not too far from the big cities in Kyushu, such as Hakata, Oita, and Kitakyushu."

Arashiyama Taki Shrine: Anecdote that’s still popular today
After leaving the Kusu Tourism Association, we arrived by car at the Mikazuki Falls parking lot in about 10 minutes.
Right in front of the parking lot are two LEDSFOCUS PRO full color LED projection lighting units.
Crossing the red bridge just above the falls brings you to Arashiyama Taki Shrine, where you can see the falls up close.
There is also a signboard with a story of tragic love involving the falls.
We were able to talk to Mr. Tatsufumi Aso of Paradiso Eight Ltd., which was commissioned by the Kusu Tourism Association.
Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to speak with us. What do you and your team do here, Mr. Aso?
Mr. Aso
Well, we organize and manage events at the request of the Kusu Tourism Association.
Great. And what do you think about the falls illumination?
Mr. Aso
Our customers love it. It was even featured on local TV.
I think the full color with automatic lighting control is fantastic.
Normally you can’t see a thing once it gets dark, so this is an event Kusu has never had before.
The lighting is used mainly to highlight the falls, but you’ll see that Japanese umbrellas and the approach to the falls are also lit up in the grounds.
Thank you. We’re sorry to have interrupted you during your work.
We’re looking forward to the sunset. Good luck with the project.

Dusk approaches at Mikazuki Falls in early fall.
It's finally sunset.
Soon the falls will be automatically lit based on a timer.
DMX control is employed to change Stanley’s LEDSFOCUS PRO full color LED projection lighting colors one after another.
When both projection lights turn white, the falls are lit up in a strong white color, and then the two lights change color at different times, allowing us to enjoy the color contrast.
The approximately 100 m wide Mikazuki Falls is illuminated by two projection lights.
We got the chance to talk to a married couple visiting the falls who had seen them on TV.
“We came here because we saw the lit up falls on TV. They’re very beautiful. The program also talked about how your projection lighting was being used at Niagara Falls, and so we just had to see the lighting for ourselves.”
