Kokura in Kitakyushu City, in the north of Fukuoka Prefecture, is located at the gateway of Kyushu Island across Kammon Strait from Honshu (largest main island of Japan).
After receiving the city hall’s approval for the photoshoot, we visited the Tourism Division.
They introduced us to the person in charge, and we headed to Kokura Castle together.
At Kokura Castle, we talked about the castle and its illumination.

The water reflects beautiful walls of the castle

Kokura Castle is known to have been be built by Tadaoki Hosokawa, who went with the Eastern Army during the War of Sekigahara in 1600, taking him 7 years starting from 1602. His wife was Gracia, daughter of Mitsuhide Akechi. While he was the feudal lord in 1612, there was a battle between Musashi Miyamoto and Kojiro Sasaki on the Ganryu Island in Kammon Strait.

Having such origins, Kokura Castle’s keep was burnt down in 1837 and rebuilt later in 1959. It went through a renewal in 2019 and started being illuminated then. The water around the castle would beautifully reflect the surroundings on quiet nights.

According to Ms. Shiratsuchi, the citizens are responding positively to the illumination. Some take photos at night, some say they re-recognized the presence of the castle, others chose the area as their jogging route after sunset.

Stanley’s ultra-narrow LED floodlight can illuminate the object very accurately without affecting the surroundings, so it is chosen by lighting designers with such needs. As we told Ms. Shiratsuchi this, she agreed and said that it is perfect for the orca illumination.

Ms. Shiratsuchi was convinced to approve the selection of Stanley’s Luminaires to illuminate the orca statues by the fact that our automobile headlamps have been officially used on a large range of cars, and by using our knowhow of optical control from our automotive lighting products, we have been able to achieve such incredible ultra narrow distribution.

Kitakyushu City is famous for illumination in the Mojiko Retro area. Along with the renewal of Kokura Castle, “Kokura Castle Shiro Terrace” has opened nearby, providing limited edition gifts of Kokura or of the castle, cafes, sightseeing information and more. They hope to see many visitors to Kokura Castle.
