Mejiro Garden showcasing its autumn leaves

Mejiro Garden is a garden in Toshima-ku, Tokyo, and is an urban oasis in a very convenient location just a 5-minute walk from Mejiro Station on the JR Yamanote Line.
It was established in 1990 as a Japanese garden where visitors can enjoy the scenery of the four seasons.
Total garden area is approximately 2842.73 m2.

Introduction

イントロダクション画像

Mejiro Garden decorated in light where Ms. Morishima won 1st prize in the competition.

Each year in autumn, we collaborate with the Lighting Design School to light up the spectacular autumn leaves in Mejiro Garden, opening the garden at night for a limited time.

Every year, students from the Lighting Design School have come up with their own themes and pit their skills against one another in a competition format to light up the garden.

This year, Satsuki Morishima, a student at the Lighting Design School who works for Akashi Kogyo, a company providing a range of electrical services, devised the theme of "Lane of four seasons" to take out 1st prize and illuminated the garden.

Thank you very much for your precious time ahead of the opening of the garden for the light up event tonight.
And thank you for using our LEDSFOCUS PRO LED floodlight in your installation.
I would like to ask some questions about the garden illumination.

Yoshiji Baba
The illumination is held each year with the cooperation of Toshima-ku, which owns Mejiro Garden, and other designated administrators.

Kentaro Koyama
The light-up event is very popular with the locals and is attended by large number of repeat visitors each year.
However, there is a residential area right behind the garden so we have to avoid light leaking into the neighboring
areas.
As a result, the narrow angle LED floodlight can be aimed with pinpoint precision and helps to overcome this problem.

Thank you.
Could you tell me a little about the Lighting Design School?

Yoshiji Baba
The Lighting Design School is the only school specializing in lighting and we offer courses in both Tokyo and Osaka with 24 classes in each course, and classes running for 90 minutes two times a week.
We have been providing these courses now for six years.
One of the themes of the classes requires students to give a presentation in a competition format, and the best work is given the opportunity to participate in the light up event at Mejiro Garden.

The students must find this very rewarding and put a lot of energy into it!
And 1st prize this year went to the design of Ms. Morishima.

Yoshiji Baba
Yes, Ms. Morishima’s presentation was very appealing and her outstanding light installation design was rich in terms of expression.

Ms. Morishima, congratulations on winning 1st prize.
Could you tell me how you feel about the award and your installation?

Satsuki Morishima
Thank you.
I was extremely happy when I heard that I had won 1st prize.
I was really glad that I took the course.
First of all, regarding the stone wall, I didn’t aim the floodlight fitted with a spread lens directly at the wall, instead aimed it close to the surface of the water to achieve an image of shimmering waves and a sea of clouds.
The stone pagoda is also symbolic, so the narrow angle enabled me to pinpoint it with precision.
I wanted to add a sense of homage, so I was very excited to see it illuminated so brightly.

I was also very surprised to see the spread of light achieved by the floodlight.
I believe the LEDSFOCUS PRO spreads beautifully through the spread lens because the original light is so sharp.

Yoshiji Baba
Because the winner’s design is actually installed in the garden, they also have a great opportunity to learn about how
it is installed.

Thank you.
It is no surprise that your perspective is one of a lighting professional and an educator.
Ms. Morishima, how would you like to utilize this award?

Satsuki Morishima
I work for my older brother’s company, Akashi Kogyo, a company providing a range of electrical services, and I would like to utilize what I learned at the Lighting Design School and through this award in future business activities.

I hope you get the opportunity to put your skills to use soon.
Mr. Baba and Mr. Koyama, do you have anything else that you would like to add?

Yoshiji Baba
The performance of the floodlights was excellent and really added something special to the light up event this year.
Thank you.
Maybe you could help to promote the Lighting Design School (laughs).

Kentaro Koyama
I loved being able to use the narrow angle floodlight together with the spread lens.
I also think the color temperature of 3,000K was a perfect match for this illumination.

Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to talk with us.
Although our positions are different, you have provided me with an insight into your passion and unique views on light.

Scene from the friendly, relaxed interview

Mr. Koyama reported later that the light-up event was extremely popular this year, attracting nearly 5,000 visitors, which is more than the previous year when entry was restricted due to COVID-19.

Installation

(Left) LEDSFOCUS PRO with spread lens installed in front of the pond
(Right) Light focused on the pond stone wall and pagoda

For the pond stone wall
LEDSFOCUS PRO 1-lens, 3,000K 2 units
+ spread lens (optional)
For the top of the stone pagoda
LEDSFOCUS PRO 1-lens, 3,000K 1 unit (2.5°)

By using the optional spread lens, you can change the focal point of the light from a spot light to a light that covers more area.
This option greatly expands the possibilities of expression using light.
The stone wall is approximately 15 m wide, but the floodlights were installed in front of the pond.
The stone wall was covered by two LEDSFOCUS PRO 1-lens floodlights from a light source approximately 13 to 17 m away.
The top of the stone pagoda is approximately 25 m away from the light source across the pond, but a single LEDSFOCUS PRO 1-lens floodlight with a narrow beam angle of 2.5° shines a sufficiently strong pinpoint light.
