Introduction

The event “YRP Open Innovation Day 2023: Creating the future with light” was held at Yokosuka Research Park (YRP) in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, on September 29 and 30, and we cooperated in the illumination display.
As part of the event, world-renowned lighting designer Motoko Ishii held a “light event” and exhibited pyramid-shaped light artworks that use the company’s LED lighting technology.
Yokosuka City is a major core city with a population of more than 375,000 people on the Miura Peninsula, positioned south of Yokohama City and Zushi City, and about an hour and 15 minutes by train from central Tokyo.
The city has a strong image as a naval port city, with Commodore Perry’s arrival in the old days, the naval base of the former Japanese navy, and now the base of the US Seventh Fleet, but apart from being a bedroom town for Tokyo and Yokohama, agriculture and fishing also thrive in the rich natural environment.
Located on high ground in this Yokosuka is Yokosuka Research Park, where multiple companies conduct Japan’s most advanced information and telecommunications research.
Inerview
Yokosuka Research Park, Inc.
Manager, Public Relations and Advertising Section, Attraction Promotion Group,
Ms. Miho Kamimura
We interviewed Ms. Kamimura, who is in charge of public relations and advertising at the event “YRP Open Innovation Day 2023: Creating the future with light.”
Thank you very much for using our company’s LED lighting technology in your pyramid-shaped light artwork.
Ms. Miho Kamimura
You’re welcome. And thank you too for your cooperation with this event.
So, could you tell us when and how YRP was established?
Ms. Miho Kamimura
YRP was established in 1997.
At the time, mobile phone development had reached its peak and we started as a research and development organization while the development of a communication method that could be used worldwide was an urgent need.
Subsequently, we realized third-generation wireless communication and the world’s first internet access service on mobile phones at a time when there were no smart phones.
So you got underway at a really hope-filled time, didn’t you?
Ms. Miho Kamimura
Yes, the address was originally different from what it is now, but because of the idea that we wanted to make it a place of light for the future, starting with radio information communication, the address changed to “Hikarinooka (Hill of Light).”
Today, wireless communication has taken a more appropriate place, with the key words optical communication and optical technology being used more often.
In this context, YRP has become a major high-tech park with the participation of various companies, research institutes and universities, and backed up by Yokosuka City, which has been promoting cooperation with and attracting various industries.
It seems that you can improve results and efficiency by bringing together a large number of companies.
Could you tell us more about this event?
Ms. Motoko Ishii, personally explaining the pyramid-shaped light artwork to Mr. Shinjiro Koizumi, a member of the House of Representatives
A fan of Ms. Motoko Ishii also came to the event.
She has lived near the venue for many years and enjoyed the event.
Ms. Miho Kamimura
YRP has announced YRP Vision 2025 for 2025.
We held YRP’s first event as part of the communication to let people know about our initiatives towards its realization.
Could you tell us about the details of the events?
Ms. Miho Kamimura
The main events today, September 28, are an opening ceremony where we will welcome guests including a bureau director from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the local mayor and Shinjiro Koizumi, a member of the House of Representatives, and an exhibition centered on participating companies.
The holding of 8K3D screenings, various lectures, concerts by Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and US Seventh Fleet musicians, exhibits by welfare facilities, and kitchen cars will liven up the event.
Also, speaking of light, the “Light Event” with world-renowned lighting designer Motoko Ishii will also be one of the highlights.
It’s an event with lots of variety, isn’t it?
Ms. Miho Kamimura
Yes, I hope that local people will also enjoy finding out about YRP’s activities.

It can be inferred that you had a lot of hard work right from the preparation stage with this event.
On a different note, our company exhibited a total of five artworks this time: two pyramids whose surface emitting light changes color; two edge-lit pyramids with lighting guide plates; and a chandelier-style pyramid. Could you tell us your thoughts when you saw them, please?
Ms. Miho Kamimura
The surface emitting light type is cute and gives a very bright impression.
The edge-lit pyramids seemed very strange to me because I could not figure out why the edges were lit.
And the chandelier was very nice and had a cute atmosphere.
They made the event evening very exciting.
I am glad that we could help your event.
Finally, Ms. Kamimura, could you please tell us about your current job and its challenges and rewards.
Ms. Miho Kamimura
My duties include the production of the website and pamphlets, preparation for seminars, handling visitors, and YRP’s advertising and public relations in general.
The rewarding part is when I feel recognition of YRP spreading, of course.
Hearing people say things like, oh there is such a place in Yokosuka, or they do such and such activities at YRP.
On the other hand, something that is a little difficult is that because there are multiple diverse companies participating at YRP, we have to give consideration to balance when we do publicity.
Thank you very much for sharing your very valuable story with us today.
Please continue to be active in YRP’s public relations and advertising activities.
